Week 6

This was our final week before we handed in our first assignment, so I decided to spend as much time as possible on applying the final touches to my artist’s statement and the database of contacts. I was able to receive some good critical feedback which I was quite happy with, I spent a lot of time applying this to my work and re-reading everything numerous times to ensure that a rhythm could be followed throughout the whole text. I also spent quite some time filtering who to add in the contact list and what information to include.

The compilation of personal contact for the database consisted of some of my clients, these people are important to me as they may be able to open doors for me in the future which may lead to bigger things. I also have also included details of friends I have in other parts of the world who are on the same path as I am as I believe they are the best people to learn and exchange techniques with which will allow me to better myself and move forward. For the organisational contacts I had built up a list of 15 – 20. From this I ended up removing many of the ones that are based in the UK and kept those that are international. I did this because I plan on moving out of the country soon and so therefore readied a list for myself in the coming future. I also cut the number down to about four or five studios which I would like to eventually work for full time. I believe it will be easier for me to tailor my portfolio to a smaller number with a higher quality than vice versa.

I shall be beginning on my second assignment soon, for this I will need to prepare:

1. A 15 minute presentation
2. Portfolio of work. This will be suitable for submission to an organisation and will serve as a representation of your work as a digital artist
3. URL of your online journal

I will continue to develop my concepts and also look at some online portfolios of other artists to see how they present their work; hopefully I can find some inspiration and settle on a composition.

Stage 1. This is where I'm currently at, the buttons are to the right and main windows to the left.

Week 5

We continued to play the Xing game in this week’s workshop. The specific task set this week though was to apply the knowledge we had obtained last week and see if any of the options changed. Our groups’ business idea also changed due to this. Personally, I found it interesting when we were discussing / negotiating how to expand the business and also to work out how and why we were going to get to that point.

I have also been working on my artist’s statement this week and have almost completed my first draft. All of the example statements that I found online were really short and only about half a page long. The task we were set was to write one in about 1000 words, it was kind of hard to do this without going off topic. The ones I found online were all on point and written out clearly, they all more or less followed the same framework which we were given, I’ve already given what I have so far to Mitja and a few other people to have a read over and give me some constructive criticism on how to develop it in to a better piece. Following the advice I get back from everyone I’m hoping that I can apply it all and generate a final piece which I can hand in.

Along with this I have also been designing some concepts for a paper & digital portfolio based design. The designs contrast very much, this is mainly due to the end medium they each will be located in. Almost a year ago I began using Adobe Flash to do simple animation and small projects, and the more I think about it the more my mind sways towards creating a flash based digital portfolio because that would mean I would get a chance to put to use all that I have learnt so far in to a single project and see what I can conjure up. Not only this but it would also be sticking close to the style of art that I like to create,

After scouring through various artists and their works, I have picked out four images that I will be submitting as part of the first assessment. They are the following:

I chose these four examples because of their eminence, their conceptual development phase and also because of their diverse subject matters. They are all also very good demonstrations of the style I like to work in and the level which I wish to surpass in the coming future,
